How to Release an Official Lyric Video on YouTube: Best Tips for Releases
A lyric video can be finished and still flop on release day. The title doesn't match what fans type, the links in the description don't click, and there's one thumbnail nobody tested. This is the publishing handoff our studio gives labels with every lyric video, written out for anyone releasing one.

The release-day checklist
Here's the short version. Each step gets its own section below.
| Step | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Verify the channel (phone, then advanced features) | 1 to 2 weeks before | Custom thumbnails need phone verification. Clickable links need advanced features. |
| Get the final file: 1080p, no watermark, commercial rights | 1 week before | You can't monetize or run ads on a watermarked or personal-use file. |
| Write title, description, credits, lyrics and hashtags | 1 week before | Typos in a live title cost clicks on day one. |
| Make three thumbnails | 1 week before | One to upload, plus two more to test against it. |
| Upload as a scheduled Premiere or a timed public upload | 2 to 3 days before | The Premiere watch page goes public early, so fans can set reminders. |
| Release on the same day as the audio | Release day | YouTube's own advice for music videos. |
| Add end screen, playlist, featured video and Shorts | Release day | Moves viewers to the next video and back to the song. |
| Start a thumbnail test | After the Premiere ends | YouTube can't test a Premiere until it's over. |
Timings are our studio's habit, not YouTube rules. The rules behind each step are linked in the sections below.
What we hand a label with every lyric video
When we deliver a lyric video to a label or manager, the file is only part of it. Umesh, our founder, lists what goes with it:
A proper title
In the format fans search for. Section 3.A detailed description breakdown
What goes in the first lines, and in what order after that. Section 4.Link sets and stream links
One main link, then one per platform, the same way every release.Any deliverables
Thumbnails, vertical clips and a Canvas, sized right. Our release visuals checklist has every size.Where the credits and lyric sheet go
Lyrics after the links, credits last.Hashtags, written in an organized way
A short, fixed order. Section 5.A pack of thumbnails for A/B tests
Three options to test against each other. Section 6.
And one rule for new creators: get the channel verified before the video goes live. "Otherwise they won't be able to put hyperlinks in their descriptions," he says. YouTube's real rule is a bit stricter than that, and section 7 covers it.
The title: match how fans search
Use this format: Artist - Song (Official Lyric Video).
It works because fans search by artist and song name first. The tag in brackets tells them which version they're getting. It's a naming habit across the music industry, not a YouTube rule. YouTube's only hard limit is 100 characters (Edit video settings).
| Field | Format | YouTube's rule |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Artist - Song (Official Lyric Video) | 100 characters max |
| Title with a guest | Artist - Song ft. Guest (Official Lyric Video) | 100 characters max |
| Other versions | (Official Music Video), (Official Visualizer), (Official Audio) | Same limit; keep one tag per upload |
| Description first lines | One line on the song, then the main stream link | The first lines show before "more" |
| Hashtags | #ArtistName #SongTitle #LyricVideo #Genre | Up to 3 show by the title; over 60 and all are ignored |
Formats are industry convention. Rules from YouTube Help: video settings, descriptions and hashtags, checked October 1, 2026.
Only call it "official" when it's on the artist's own channel, or the label's, with the artist's approval. A fan upload that calls itself official misleads the people you want to reach.
The description breakdown
YouTube splits a description into two parts: what people see before they tap "more", and the rest. It suggests using the first few lines to describe the video, and caps the whole thing at 5,000 characters (Tips for video descriptions). Copy this template:
Artist Name - Song Title (Official Lyric Video) Out now: [your main smart link] Stream "Song Title": Spotify: [link] Apple Music: [link] YouTube Music: [link] Amazon Music: [link] Follow Artist Name: Instagram: [link] TikTok: [link] Website: [link] Lyrics: [Verse 1] ... [Chorus] ... Credits: Written by: [names] Produced by: [name] Mixed and mastered by: [name] Label: [name] Lyric video by: [studio or name] #ArtistName #SongTitle #LyricVideo #Genre
Link sets and stream links
Link set is the group of links you paste into every release: one main link, then one per platform.
The main link goes in line two, so it shows before "more". Many artists use a smart link there: a single page that lists every store. Then list the stores in the same order every time, so repeat fans know where to look.
Credits and the lyric sheet
Put the lyrics after the links and before the credits. Paste them from the final lyric sheet, the same text that's in the video, with section labels like [Chorus]. Most song lyrics fit well inside 5,000 characters; check a long rap verse before you paste.
Credits go last: writers, producer, mix and master, label, and who made the video. YouTube's own tips say to call out collaborators with credits.
Hashtags, kept in order
Hashtags are keywords with a # in front. YouTube's rules, from its hashtag help page:
- You can put them in the title or the description.
- Up to three hashtags from the description show next to your title. YouTube picks the ones it considers most engaging.
- No spaces. #SongTitle, not #Song Title.
- Use more than 60 and YouTube ignores every hashtag on the video. Over-tagging can also get it pulled from search.
- Unrelated hashtags break its misleading-metadata rules.
Our studio rule: three to five, at the very end of the description, always in this order: artist, song, format, genre. Keep them out of the title. The title is for the artist and song name.
A thumbnail pack for A/B tests
YouTube suggests a 16:9 thumbnail at 3840 x 2160 pixels, at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. From a phone the file must be under 2 MB; from a computer, 50 MB. You can only upload a custom thumbnail once your account is verified (Add custom thumbnails).
Now the pack. YouTube Studio has a built-in test for this, listed as "Test & compare thumbnails" (A/B test titles & thumbnails):
- Upload up to 3 thumbnails, titles, or both.
- YouTube shows them to viewers at the same time and picks the winner by watch time share, not click-through rate.
- It runs on a computer only, and your channel needs advanced features.
- It takes a few days up to two weeks. The result can be Winner, Performed Same or Inconclusive.
- You can't test a Premiere until it has ended.
That watch-time detail matters. A thumbnail that promises something the video doesn't deliver can win clicks and still lose the test.
For a lyric video, make the three differ in one big way each: the hook line, big; the artist; the cover art. For type that reads at thumbnail size, see our lyric video fonts guide. For colors, see the lyric video color palette guide.

New channel? Verify it before release day
This is the step new artists miss. YouTube splits features into three levels (feature access):
| Level | How you get it | What it unlocks for a release |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Just a channel | Upload videos, make playlists |
| Intermediate | Verify a phone number | Custom thumbnails, videos over 15 minutes, live streaming |
| Advanced | Phone, plus enough channel history or ID/video verification | Clickable links in descriptions, pinned comments, A/B tests, chapters |
Source: YouTube Help, feature access and sharing links, checked October 1, 2026. Partial list.
So Umesh's advice holds, with one correction. Phone verification alone doesn't make your links clickable. YouTube's links page says: "To add clickable external links, you must enable your channel's access to advanced features." A brand-new channel may not have the history yet, and ID or video verification "isn't available to all creators".
Start in YouTube Studio: Settings, then Channel, then Feature eligibility (how to verify). We tell clients to start at least a week before release. That's our buffer, not a YouTube timeline.
Best tips for releases
Release on the same day as the song
YouTube for Artists recommends premiering the official music video on the same day as the audio. It says "official music videos uploaded on the same day as the audio release generate higher subscriber growth and higher views in the first two weeks" (Release day strategy). That's about music videos, but the logic carries over.
If you also have a music video, don't drop both at the exact same time. YouTube advises against it. Some of our clients put the lyric video out first and the music video weeks or months later. Others do the reverse.
Premiere or plain upload?
Premiere is a scheduled first showing of a video that fans watch together, with live chat.
YouTube creates a public watch page ahead of time (Premiere a new video). Fans can set a reminder and get a notification about 30 minutes before, then another at the start. Afterwards it stays as a normal video and keeps the views.
Our rule: Premiere it if you have fans to gather, even a few hundred. Share the watch page link a few days ahead. If the channel is brand new, a plain public upload at a set time is fine. Two limits: Premieres don't support output above 1080p, and you can't A/B test until the Premiere ends.
End screens, featured video and playlists
End screens sit in the last 5 to 20 seconds of a video that's at least 25 seconds long, with up to four elements (end screens). Keep those seconds free of lyrics so nothing gets covered. Point them at the music video, the next single, or a subscribe button.
YouTube for Artists also suggests setting the new video as your channel's featured video. It suggests a playlist of all the release content near the top of the channel, too.
Shorts on the same day
YouTube for Artists says it's okay to post Shorts on the same day as a music video premiere. It says they won't hurt how YouTube recommends your long video. Cut 15 to 30 seconds around the hook. Our guide to vertical clips for Shorts covers how.
Where the video lands: your channel, OAC and Topic
Upload the lyric video to the artist's own channel. Artists can have several channel types (YouTube Help):
- Your channel: the one you run. This is where the lyric video goes.
- Topic channel: made by YouTube automatically, named "Artist Name - Topic". It holds Art Tracks: a still of your cover art with the song, made from the audio your distributor delivers. You don't upload there.
- Official Artist Channel (OAC): YouTube merges your channel, Topic channel and Vevo subscribers into one place (OAC help).
YouTube recommends that artists with a Topic channel set up an OAC. If you have one, upload there. Your subscribers see new videos wherever they first subscribed.
The file you upload, and your own Content ID
Content ID is YouTube's system that scans every upload against audio and video that rights owners have submitted (How Content ID works). If your distributor sends your song to Content ID, your own lyric video can get claimed. Ask your distributor before release how they keep your channel clear. If a claim still lands, YouTube lets you dispute it when you hold all the rights. The claimant then has 30 days to respond (Dispute a claim).
The video file carries its own rights too. Make Lyric Video's free version is a full-length 720p video with a watermark on every frame. It's fine to post but not to monetize. Pay $29 for commercial rights and you get the same video at 1080p with no watermark, emailed to you. That covers YouTube monetization, ads and broadcast.
Get a release-ready file
Upload your song and make the full lyric video free at 720p with a watermark on every frame. Fine to post, not to monetize. $29 gets the clean 1080p file with commercial rights.
Everything in this guide is doable yourself. If you'd rather hand it off, our studio's Gold package ships the lyric video with three YouTube thumbnail designs (a ready-made test pack), three vertical clips, a Spotify Canvas and cover art. See the lyric video with thumbnails and vertical clips packages.
Hand off the whole release pack
A designed lyric video plus thumbnails for your A/B test, vertical clips for Shorts, a Spotify Canvas and cover art. You see a preview before the full build.

FAQ
What makes a lyric video "official"?
It's official when the artist or their label releases it on the artist's own channel. YouTube Help doesn't define an "official lyric video". The "(Official Lyric Video)" tag in the title is an industry habit that tells fans this is the approved version, not a fan upload.
Should I Premiere my lyric video?
Premiere it if you have fans to gather. YouTube creates a public watch page early, so fans can set reminders and chat when it starts. On a brand-new channel, a plain upload at a set time works too. Premieres don't support output above 1080p, and you can't A/B test thumbnails until the Premiere ends.
Why can't I add clickable links to my description?
YouTube only makes external links in long-form descriptions clickable once your channel has advanced features. You get them with phone verification plus enough channel history, or ID or video verification where offered. Links in Shorts descriptions are never clickable. Start verification well before release day.
Why did my own lyric video get a Content ID claim?
Your distributor may have sent your song to Content ID, which scans every upload, including yours. Ask your distributor how they keep your own channel from being claimed. If you hold all the rights, you can dispute the claim in YouTube Studio, and the claimant has 30 days to respond.
Should the lyrics go in the YouTube description?
Yes. Paste the full lyrics from your final lyric sheet, after the stream links and before the credits. YouTube descriptions allow up to 5,000 characters, which fits most songs. Label sections like [Chorus] so fans can follow along.
What size should a lyric video thumbnail be?
YouTube suggests 16:9 at 3840 x 2160 pixels, at least 640 pixels wide, as a JPG or PNG. The file must be under 2 MB from a phone and 50 MB from a computer. You need phone verification to upload a custom one.
