Why Lyric Videos Are So Popular (and Still Are in 2026)

Updated September 30, 202611 min read8 sections

Yes, lyric videos are still popular in 2026. One released in June 2025 has already passed 1.7 billion YouTube views. But they're a release tool, and official music videos still fill most of the all-time charts. The numbers below show both sides.

Why lyric videos still win in 2026. A concert crowd with one phone held high, its screen glowing.

The short answer

Lyric videos are popular because they give fans the words at the moment they want them.

Lyric video is a video where the song's words appear on screen in time with the music. It can be simple text on a background or fully designed, animated type. It usually doesn't show the artist performing.

Three things keep them going:

  • Fans want the words. People look up lyrics to sing along and to catch lines they misheard.
  • They're cheap and fast to make. An artist can have one ready on release day.
  • They work anywhere. On a phone, on mute, or for a listener who doesn't speak the language.

And yes, they're still popular in 2026. The honest limit: at the very top of YouTube, official music videos still win most of the time. A lyric video supports a release. It rarely replaces a great music video.

Why do people watch lyric videos?

Start with the fan. Nobody clicks a lyric video for the visuals alone. They click because they want the words.

They help you learn the song

The biggest reason is singing along. A new song has lines you can't make out yet. A lyric video shows each line as it's sung, so you learn it in a few plays. It also settles arguments about a misheard line.

Streaming apps see the same habit. Spotify says lyrics are one of its most popular features, "viewed hundreds of millions of times each day" (Spotify Newsroom, February 2026). Lyric videos meet that same need on YouTube, where a lot of people listen to music.

They work with the sound off

Many people watch video on a phone, many of them with the sound off or low. A music video on mute loses most of its meaning. A lyric video still tells you what the song says. That makes it easy to follow in a feed and easy to share.

They help listeners who don't speak the language

Many fans love songs in a language they only half know. Seeing the words helps them follow along and learn the lines. The same goes for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The text carries the song's meaning when the sound can't.

Why fans watch

  • To learn the words and sing along
  • To catch a line they misheard
  • To follow the song with the sound off
  • To read along in a language they half know

Why artists make them

  • A video ready on release day
  • Far cheaper than a music video shoot
  • Something to share before the music video
  • An official result when fans search "song + lyrics"
Two sides of the same video. Fans want the words; artists want a fast, cheap visual that catches the lyrics search.

Why do artists and labels make them?

Now the artist's side. A lyric video solves four problems at once.

  1. It's the first visual on release day. A music video can take weeks to shoot and edit. A lyric video can be ready the day the song comes out, so the release has something to watch on YouTube.
  2. It costs far less than a shoot. Back in 2013, Billboard reported that Hopeless Records rarely spent more than $800 on a lyric video. A music video shoot with a crew and locations costs far more.
  3. It fills the gap before the music video. Many releases put out a lyric video first and the music video later. "Closer" is the classic case: its lyric video went up on July 29, 2016, and the official video followed on October 24, almost three months later.
  4. It owns the "lyrics" search. Fans type "[song name] lyrics" into YouTube. If the artist doesn't post a lyric video, a stranger's upload may get those views. An official one keeps them on the artist's channel.

Two things stand out. First, "Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters. Its official lyric video went up on June 23, 2025. About 15 months later, it has 1.75 billion views. The format still works for brand-new releases.

Second, India uses the format heavily. Hindi-language uploads hold four of the top ten spots, and three of them are film songs posted as "Lyrical" videos. Of the 91 lyric videos we counted, 27 use the word "Lyrical" in their title.

Some lyric videos even beat the official video for the same song. Here are the six songs where both videos made the list:

What the numbers don't show

Now the honest part. Official music videos still dominate. Lyric videos are only 2 of the top 100, 11 of the top 500 and 91 of the top 2,500. That's about 1 in 27 of the biggest music videos on YouTube.

The fair read: lyric videos are a real, lasting format, and new ones still reach billions. But they make up only a small slice of the biggest hits.

A short history: from cue cards to a release-day standard

Lyric videos went from a one-off stunt to a normal step in a release. Here are the moments that got them there.

Lyric videos, 1960s to 2026
YearWhat happened
1960sBob Dylan flips lyric cue cards for "Subterranean Homesick Blues" in the documentary Dont Look Back.
2010CeeLo Green's 2010 single "F-- You" gets a lyric video. Billboard later calls him "a lyric video pioneer."
2013A Disney Music Group executive tells Billboard a lyric video is now "a given" in a rollout.
2016"Closer" gets its lyric video in July, three months before the official video. It now has 3.46B views.
2025"Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters gets an official lyric video in June. It passes 1.7B views.
2026Spotify says its lyrics are viewed hundreds of millions of times a day.

By 2013, Billboard also noted a few lyric videos had passed 100 million views without a single shot of the artist. For the full story, see the full history of lyric videos.

What makes a lyric video actually get watched?

Our studio has made 800+ custom lyric video projects over more than a decade. Four things decide whether people watch or scroll past:

  1. Type you can read on a phone. Bold letters, strong contrast and nothing tiny. Many viewers will see it on a small screen.
  2. Words that land on the beat. When a line appears as it's sung, the video feels made on purpose. When it drifts, it feels like karaoke. Our guide on how to sync lyrics to the beat covers the details.
  3. One look that matches the cover art. The video and the release should feel like the same project. In our client work, brighter palettes have tended to get more clicks and views than very dark ones. That's a pattern we've seen. It isn't a rule.
  4. A hook moment worth replaying. Make the main line bigger or bolder than the verses, so it hits even with the sound off.

Auto-captions and a designed lyric video can look alike at first. Captions only write down the words. A designed lyric video uses size, timing and color to make the song feel bigger. For looks to start from, see our list of lyric video styles.

FAQ

Are lyric videos still popular in 2026?

Yes. On September 30, 2026, 91 of YouTube's 2,500 most-viewed music videos were lyric videos, by our count of kworb.net's all-time list. Fifteen of them had more than 1 billion views. "Golden" from KPop Demon Hunters, a lyric video released in June 2025, had already passed 1.7 billion.

Do lyric videos get more views than music videos?

Usually not at the very top. Official music videos fill most of YouTube's all-time top list. But some lyric videos beat their own song's music video. "Closer" by The Chainsmokers is the biggest case: its lyric video has about 3.46 billion views, against about 514 million for its official video.

What is the most viewed lyric video on YouTube?

"Closer (Lyric)" by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey, with about 3.46 billion views on September 30, 2026. It ranked #29 among all music videos on kworb.net's all-time list. "Something Just Like This (Official Lyric Video)" was next, with about 2.55 billion.

Why do artists release a lyric video before the music video?

A lyric video is faster and cheaper to make, so it can be ready on release day. It gives fans something to watch and share, and it catches people searching YouTube for the song's lyrics. The music video can follow weeks or months later.

Can you make money from a lyric video on YouTube?

Yes, if you own or control the rights to the song and the video's license allows commercial use. Make Lyric Video's free version is watermarked and can't be monetized. The $29 version is 1080p with no watermark and includes commercial rights. Our monetization guide covers how YouTube's rights system handles music.
